excuse me whilst I just go lie down in the corner and die…

:shock_tb:

Miracles will never cease.
I am sitting here with a full, yes that is full second draft of the thesis.

In case you didn’t here me properly just then over my shrieks of jubilation, I am sitting here looking in blank bewilderment at upwards of 35,000 words that I wrote myself about how archaeologists and wikis could be a match made in heaven (or not, but that would be telling 😉 ).

Yes, after six months, the thing that has literally broken me into a useless puddle of uselessness is very nearly finished.

Now I’ve just got to go and make it 15,000 words fewer (that’s what appendices are for 😉 ) and check that in my insanity I haven’t concluded by calling my supervisor a penguin or something.

Looks like I will be handing it in for Christmas after all.

Don’t look at me like that! It could happen.

Ouch!

Wow. Moving your blog to a new domain is one sure fire way of completely removing your presence from the web. In one fell swoop, my Google page rank has dropped from a slightly-alive 3 to a very-very dead zero. Ditto my Technorati presence (9 to nil).

This is a general call to everyone out there – if you have a link to me please can you update it? It’s most likely going to be in a linkroll you’ve forgotten about, or on some ‘about’ page.

I’m not saying that I used to have a *large* web presence, but, well, I wouldn’t mind getting back to where I was before 🙂

The important thing is not to stop questioning

Ok, how many people live in Antarctica? Seriously, I am curious, because my host-stats include a breakdown of traffic from the continent of Antarctica. Not surprisingly, I have no people visiting me from Antarctica. I have one person from Nambia, another from the Sudan, and 6 from Uruguay (I like the name of Uruguay), but none from the frozen polar wastes. Odd, that. The Arctic doesn’t have a column, so why should the Antarctic?

If, by some very very odd coincidence, I now have readers reading this from some Antarctic research station, then hello! I was wrong, quite clearly. Oh, and can you get me a picture of some penguins?

A short saying oft contains much wisdom

Ok, a really really short Roast today. It’s just been a slow news week is all.
To pad things out a bit, here is what else I have learnt this week – webcams are evil (but good, if that makes sense), skype is great, Yahoo!IM is probably one of the most infuriating programs I have ever had the misfortune to be forced to use, MSN Messenger 5.0 for Mac isn’t much better, and wikis are really starting to get on my tits. That’s it.

The Aikido FAQ: The Aikido Dojo Guide. Thanks to Minion Neko for this! (trust me, funny!)

Lifehack Your Books: Dogear, Writing In Books, and Apologizing to LIbrarians.

A Christmas Carol – Episode 1podcast. I mentioned this before, but I don’t want you to miss it 🙂

John Spencer, who played Leo in The West Wing, died on Friday of a heart attack. (This story doesn’t have a particular link, because all the news sources I have found give spoilers, and that’s just not fair. )

Decentralised Information Group Breadcrumbs – So I Have a Blog. I am such a geek. Discovering that Tim Berners Lee (the chappy who created the WWW in the first place) has a blog just made my day. As I said, geek.

The best of the rest

Wiki wiki everywhere, and not a drop of commonsense to be found

(Took me five minutes to log in to post this. I think my server and WordPress are ganging up on me to make sure I finish writing the my chapter by the end of the day. Evil.)

I have been watching the whole WIkipedia/Seigenthaler debacle like an avid hawk for many reasons, not just because it couldn’t come at a worse time as the godhead is at a conference this weekend bigging up the wiki, and we could do without anti-wiki press. I haven’t tried to form my thoughts into a coherent argument for many reasons, including that I’m worried it would end up being better written than the chapter I am currently struggling with, and that would just be heart-breaking.

Danah, as usual, though has written a wonderful article all about it, and I would like to bring to your attention her closing thoughts:

I am worried about how academics are treating Wikipedia and i think that it comes from a point of naivety. Wikipedia should never be the sole source for information. It will never have the depth of original sources. It will also always contain bias because society is inherently biased, although its efforts towards neutrality are commendable. These are just realizations we must acknowledge and support. But what it does have is a huge repository of information that is the most accessible for most people. Most of the information is more accurate than found in a typical encyclopedia and yet, we value encyclopedias as a initial point of information gathering. It is also more updated, more inclusive and more in-depth. Plus, it’s searchable and in the hands of everyone with digital access (a much larger population than those with encyclopedias in their homes). It also exists in hundreds of languages and is available to populations who can’t even imagine what a library looks like. Yes, it is open. This means that people can contribute what they do know and that others who know something about that area will try to improve it. Over time, articles with a lot of attention begin to be inclusive and approximating neutral. The more people who contribute, the stronger and more valuable the resource. Boycotting Wikipedia doesn’t make it go away, but it doesn’t make it any better either.

That’s all I have to say. Night all 🙂

The most wasted of all days is the one without laughter

I was pondering what to blog about today, especially after I Mini Meadowed (see the side bar) the news about the webcam, then I open up the inbox and see that we have some Blog Minion news:

RIB for this: penguin watch. I’ve no idea what he was looking for when he stumbled across it, and frankly I’m not too sure I want to know, but find it he did.

JB is reaffirming his Minion credentials with this: Taking Fat Penguins for a walk.

Both of, congratulations on being the first Minions of the new site 🙂 Have a button:
